  1. Empty Pages

This is a song about some of the stages that I’ve often gone through when writing a song. The musical idea for this song came long before lyrics and I didn’t have a lyrical theme in mind for quite a while. I tried a few theme ideas but nothing seemed to fit. Then I got either lazy or creative, depending on your perspective, and wrote about writing a song, beginning with struggling to decide on a theme.

Musically, this song sounds like it comes from a mixture of inspirations musically; perhaps some Ben Folds + Green Day + Phish or some other jam band.

As with all of the songs on my debut album, I wrote, performed, recorded and mixed myself it in my 104 year-old house.

Lyrics

I got these empty pages
They say it comes in stages
I’d settle for a simple theme

I write for seven hours
Then all my words turn sour
It’s all a part of this disease

Look for a line to blow your mind but all I've got's a melody
I keep on sending and pretending that this one will set me free

When all the words start flowin’
I cannot wait to show 'em
When I turn up on their TV

I think this one is special
It’s got a big potential
This one’s a hit, a guarantee

Look for a line to blow your mind but all I've got's a melody
I keep on sending and pretending that this one will set me free

I shouldn’t care about what they say
(Da-da-da-da)
But I have always been afraid
(Da-da-da-da)
That they will take it all away
(Da-da-da-da)
No more feedback

This time my brain is broken
Insert another token
I’ll turn it on to let you see

I’m just a simple Simon
With all this simple rhymin’
There ain’t much more than what you see

Look for a line to blow your mind but all I've got's a melody
I keep on sending and pretending that this one will set me free
