Background Information

This song was written when I was giving up on an idea that I’d had since I was a kid: the idea that there’s a magical, perfect partner out there for me, and that if I can just find this person, all of my problems will be solved. I was realizing that the expectations that I’d held were not realistic and were not possible for anyone to meet. I was singing to what I thought was an imaginary person that I’d long wished existed.

My perspective has continued to grow as I’ve continued to learn and evolve since initially writing this song a few years ago. I have now met someone who has restored much of the hope that I’d had in what a relationship can be, and how wonderful it can be. I like to think now that I was writing this song about her when I was giving up hope that she existed.

By the way, the first line in the song (“And when you go to Neverland, they’re gonna take you by the hand, you’ll never know, no”) came instantly when I was coming up with the melody, and I’ve never had a clear definition of what I meant by it. The same is true for the line in the chorus (“I might be day-o”), which I couldn’t get myself to change because it just felt right to sing these words for some reason.

Lyrics

"Neverland"

And when you go to neverland

They’re gonna take you by the hand

You’ll never know

oh oh oh

It was a long, long time ago

And now I wonder if you know

But I should go

oh oh oh

Then I’m trying to get so high

But I’m flying away

And I get so tired

I might be day-oh day-oh day-oh day-oh oh

Day-oh day-oh day-oh oh

Another day another song

Another place I don’t belong

I never know

Oh oh oh

So then they hurry us along

I should have known that it was wrong

I didn’t know

Oh oh oh

Then I’m trying to get so high

But I’m flying away

And I get so tired

I might be day-oh day-oh day-oh day-oh oh

Day-oh day-oh day-oh oh

Looking for a useful revelation

Oh oh oh oh

And a way to find it on my own

Oh oh oh oh

Need some time to find out what I know

And a way to finally let you go

So many things I should have known

But now I have to let you go

We’ll never know

oh oh oh

Then I’m trying to get so high

But I’m flying away

And I get so tired

I might be day-oh day-oh day-oh day-oh oh

Day-oh day-oh day-oh oh
